Sustainable construction in Europe. €20 billion in investments linked to the NEB Facility for the 2025–27 period

During the press conference launching MIBA 2025, the major trade event organized by Fiera Milano that brings together four leading exhibitions—Smart Building ExpoMADE expoSICUREZZA and GEE – Global Elevator Exhibition—and that in its 2023 edition attracted over 80,000 professional visitors, the Politecnico di Milano, represented by Professor Niccolò Aste and his team—Claudio Del Pero and Fabrizio Leonforte from the Department of Architecture, Built Environment and Construction Engineering—presented the findings of the third MIBA Observatory.

The study offers a medium-term outlook (2025–2027) for the construction market, identifying the New European Bauhaus (NEB) as a key driver—a European strategy aiming to combine sustainability, beauty, and inclusiveness in the construction sector.

From a financial standpoint, the main instrument of this European program will be the NEB Facility, which will invest €240 million per year. According to several studies, this is expected to generate a financial leverage of 30 times the initial investment, corresponding to over €7 billion per year, for a total of more than €20 billion in NEB-oriented projects across Europe over the next three years. In Italy, the study estimates a significant impact of approximately €2.5 billion over the same period.

This represents an important driver of innovation, impacting both public and private construction.

However, what stands out most in the study presented by Prof. Aste is that the four sectors represented by MIBA account for around 50% of the entire market linked to the New European Bauhaus, making this event a key observatory of the ongoing transformation.

Specifically, the Politecnico estimates that in the Italian market alone, investments over the next three years stemming from the NEB Facility will amount to approximately €680 million in sustainable architecture components (Made Expo), €350 million in digital technologies and home & building automation (Smart Building Expo), €65 million in accessibility technologies (GEE), and €150 million in safety and security solutions (Sicurezza).
