Are We at a Standstill or on the Verge of a Breakthrough?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

At the moment, we seem to be at a standstill. Hopefully, this is just a temporary slowdown before a turning point. While the digitalization of public administration<\/strong> is advancing rapidly\u2014unfortunately leaving some behind, such as the elderly and less educated\u2014ultra-broadband connections<\/strong> are still struggling to spread and, even where available, to attract users.<\/p>\n

On one hand, the central government is pushing for the digitalization of core services. On the other, local authorities are struggling to keep up with the national strategy<\/strong>. Meanwhile, citizens see few value-added services<\/strong> that would make ultra-broadband connectivity more appealing\u2014apart from streaming content<\/strong>, which continues to drive up subscription fees. Yet, there are far more valuable services<\/strong> that should be promoted, benefiting both citizens and public finances.<\/p>\n

The Green Deal Is Dead, Long Live the Green Deal!<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Ultra-broadband connectivity<\/strong> is undeniably the key enabler<\/strong> for making smart buildings<\/strong> truly operational. Smart buildings remain the most effective, fastest-to-implement, and highest-ROI strategy<\/strong> to achieve the EU\u2019s decarbonization goals<\/strong>. In fact, properly deployed automation systems<\/strong>, tailored to the type of building and capable of communicating external conditions<\/strong> as outlined in the Smart Readiness Indicator (SRI)<\/strong>, could single-handedly meet the 2030 CO\u2082 reduction targets<\/strong> for the building sector\u2014which, let\u2019s not forget, accounts for 40% of total emissions<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Currently, the Green Deal<\/strong> is facing serious challenges<\/strong> due to misinformation and misplaced priorities<\/strong>. There is too much focus on vehicle electrification<\/strong>\u2014which accounts for less than 20% of emissions and remains far from technological parity<\/strong> with internal combustion engines\u2014and far too little attention on building automation<\/strong>, a well-established, ready-to-deploy solution<\/strong> that could support the implementation of Renewable Energy Sources (FERNP)<\/strong>. Without a proper dispatching system<\/strong>, instead of lowering electricity bills, these sources actually drive costs higher<\/strong> to maintain grid stability, which is less flexible than commonly assumed<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

A Scientific Approach to Building Renovation<\/strong><\/h3>\n

If we took a scientific approach<\/strong> to building renovation<\/strong>, focusing first on measurement, automation, communication, and energy resource networking<\/strong> before making structural modifications, we could drastically accelerate Europe\u2019s climate goals.<\/strong><\/p>\n
